BOGT - Blood of Government

AN EXCERPT FROM BLOOD OF GOVERNMENT

She suits her name. It’s so powerful, full of beauty and rage. – Blake Sinthar

Sometimes, there are those in the world who will rule. There are those in the world who will simper down. And then, there are those who will fight, fight against cruelty from those who are rich and look down on the poor.

All three groups lived in our village, to some extent. The elders considered those who came to them for advice as simple peasants, and immediately treated them as such. The majority of people simpered down before the elders, accepting their word as law.

But my family – and Blake – would fight. We refused to follow those who were cruel to those who needed help so blindly. Most would look the other way when the elders were talking down the peasants, but my father, Danyll Ivakov, would not. He had been locked in the village gaol for roughly a year, in the grand total of time he had been in and out.

My mother, Nuala, was much more subtle. She would leave anonymous notes upon her numerous break-ins to the elders’ council house.

Alane Ivakov has been born into a village strife with tyrants who masquerade as "helping" the people. Nuala, her mother, was a rebel. Danyll, her father, rebelled against the elders. Jordan, her brother, was apathetic, though he did help their parents sometimes. Blake Sinthar, Alane's best friend, and Alane (of course!) can only look at each other and think two words. Burn. Burn.

But now things have taken a turn for the worse. Her family has disappeared, leaving Alane alone, unprepared to fight. If she ventures out into the world, will she notice how corrupt it has become?
